Remembering our Garden

This time of the year makes me think of the garden that we had in the desert.  We eat fresh vegetables every night with dinner.  Having a garden was nice because I could just walk outside and grab whatever veggie I wanted right from our garden.  One summer Trent and I even made pickles and fresh salsa.  Some of the things we had were tomatoes, beets, carrots, squash, 2 kinds of lettuce, cucumbers, bell peppers, jalapenos, zucchini, and radishes we had other things that I am not remembering.  We also had herbs like sage, thyme, rosemary, basil, dill and others.  I loved it.
The garden was really Trent's.  He loved it.  He dug up the ground and put in the sprinklers.  Built the boxes for the garden.  Bought soil to put in the boxes.  Then prepared the mounds for planting.  The tradition was for us to plant the garden Conference weekend.  I helped him plant, but the rest was up to him.  His favorite thing to do was water the garden every day when he got home from work.(with the hose)  He said it was very therapeutic.  It's something that I will miss while we rent.  But we plan to at least get a couple of pots and plant something in them.

On the back wall we had a grape vine.

On the left of we had flowers on each side and in the
 middle was the herb box

These were all the veggies we planted.

We have a garden and although they are a lot of work, they are so rewarding. I love all the fresh veggies in the summer. Going to the store doesn't even come CLOSE to home grown freshness!

Thank you for sharing this. I remember when Jamie and Trent talked about box gardening. Trent's garden really worked and ours never produced anything good. We also had the "conference weekend tradition." This year we started earlier and hope to have something work out this time. We are trying strawberries. We just have them in pots hanging on our back porch. Yum! Thanks for adding the pictures as I'll show them to Jamie. You guys made it look so beautiful. Jamie might have to call Trent for some pointers. We miss you all!

Seriously impressive. We have moved so many times that we've had too many summers without a garden, but hopefully this one will change.

I'm impressed... Dave and I don't know much about that sort of thing. Dave understand the hose thing though. I think all men like to stand and water with the hose! Funny!

Why not have a garden here? I'm impressed you could make things grow in the desert.

I would love to have a garden too but everytime I've tried everything died. Actually I think I did pluck a tomato one time. I know, I know....I'm amazing. Maybe Trent could give some tips, especially for here in the desert.

Very nice garden. Trent could always come and do a garden in our backyard. We wouldn't mind and we would share all our freshness with you. Every year we talk about it and think about it and neither of us get around to actually doing it. We even have a perfect spot for a vegetable garden. Just an idea

Yes, I agree that Trent needs to post a 'how to grow in the desert' We are doing alright with our garden, but it's a little puny. Great pictures! Take some of your planter when you do it. We had a planter when we lived in SanRamon, but some cats thought it was great litter box. Yuck...

I had no idea you could grow all that stuff out here!!! You've inspired me. Maybe some day I'll learn the gardening art.

I am jealous of your garden! All we have are empty planter boxes. At least we have great intentions!!!!

The thing I miss most are home grown tomatoes...there's nothing like them. Maybe I'll give them a try....you've given me a little motivation. Your garden was beautiful.
