Should I or Shouldn't i?

I have had a lot of people comment on the fact that Tatum's ears are pierced.  I got them pierced when she was two weeks old.  And I am very glad that I did.  You see when Madisen was a baby I talked about getting her ears pierced, but I hesitated.  And then before I new it she was one

and I didn't want her playing with them.  So I waited until she was four.  Why Four?  That is the age that I got my ears pierced.  I did fine with mine other than the fact that my cousin decided to rip out my earring.(Maybe I should have taken that as a clue?)  But that's a whole other story.  Anyway, I realize now that I should have done it when she was baby, or waited until she was a little older (8 or 9).  We've had a lot of problems with her ears.  First her ears got infected (she has to have REAL gold), then one fell out and her ear closed.  She wouldn't let me get them pierced again until she was almost 6.  Then she decided to push her earrings very tight so

that they would not fall out again.  Her ears started to decay and they were going through her ears.  There was green stuff all around them and it looked like her earrings didn't have backs.  I thought I was going to have to have them surgically removed.  It was really gross, I ended up having to pull the back of her earring back through her ear.  It ended up being okay, and her ears are fine now, but it was more than I bargained for.

My mom is Cuba, and in the Hispanic culture you get your ears pierced at birth.  My mom and my Aunt both have their ears pierced and have never had any problems.  So I decided with Tatum that I would do them young.  You see they are never going to be a novelty because they have always been a part of her.  In short, I am for getting your babies ears pierced.  It's cute and they don't even know the earrings are there.  Plus you have less chance of them touching them or playing with them.

Did I mention they are really cute?!

Adorable! Jamie took Madison to get her ears pierced at age one. Since he is 1/4 Hispanic, he wanted to keep that tradition alive. I think he forgot about the tradition with Brooke. You're kids are too cute!

Wow, I guess I'm really behind with Aubrey. She has been asking though, and I've been wondering if she's still too young. She's nine, but not very responsible. She lost 3 jackets last month. Anyway, I got mine pierced at 7 and I had problems (though not as bad as you describe Madisen having--that's awful!) I think I will let Aubrey get hers pierced in the next year. I've never thought about getting a babies ears done. It seems like a good idea, but I would think they would mess with them. (maybe Tatum is just too angelic to mess with hers :) They are cute on her.

I have no moral stance on this whatsoever. I just tell my girls that when they can completely clean and turn and keep track of them, they can have them--which for my oldest was 7. I also monitor the length of the earring, because I want to her to look little girlish and not in any way, like she's some hussy.

I agree that getting them done as a baby is probably the best way to go. Since I didn't do it, I am making my girls wait till they're older and can care for them themselves. Hey, am I watching your kids this week so you can work at school? I can't remember if we planned it.

Claire did the same thing, push her earrings in too far. It was sick.

You're right, Tatum is adorable. Max was talking about her all day yesterday. I think Alice might have some competition.

I am half Mexican and got my ears done at 3 weeks old! My husband wanted to wait to get my Madison's ear done till 8 years. But, he left to go fishing in Alaska (and when the cat's away the mice will play!) I took her to get them done at 4 years old. Our next girl, we got them done on her 1st birthday! No regrets!!!! Sorry about all your ear problems, but they sure look darn cute!

I did both my girls at 2 months for the same reasons! I wouldn't do it any different. EVen though Kamryn had ALL the same problems you described with madison, but her's never closed even though she had to go aver a year of her 4 years without wearing any! Payton has been better....

Wow, I must be old fashion or something. I don't have my ears pierced and like I said, I'm almost 30! I like being unique...people are always astonished when they realize I don't have holes in my head.

Oh, I am sooo glad that you did a post about this because I've been dying to know. I think I might get Faith's done when she's a year old. They just look so darn cute! They even offer it at the doctor's office! And I like all your reasoning. I had NEVER thought about it that way, but it makes perfect sense. Now I want to do it!

I think they look adorable on her. And this way she's always use to having them in her ears. And hey you've got to embrace your heritage.

Tatum is so adorable and I love the earrings. I guess I'll have to wait until Avery brings it up later in life because I definitely missed that window. It was so great to see you last weekend. I hope your kids are feeling better and you had a good trip home. Hopefully we'll see you again soon....for real. :)
